Freelance Editing
Services for Authors

With Whom Will You Work?

I primarily work with authors who have completed books that require copy editing prior to final proofreading and publication, but I also edit articles, academic papers, and short stories. I work with authors who plan to self-publish or POD publish, as well as with authors who plan to submit their manuscripts to traditional publishers.

What Type of Editing Services Do You Provide?

I provide detailed, line by line copy editing. I carefully review texts for spelling, grammar, punctuation, word choice, word flow, and references (if any). I also make minor stylistic revisions as necessary.

The level of services I provide go well beyond basic proofreading, but they do not include detailed critique. I do not rewrite manuscripts or offer marketing assessments or creative input. If you desire creative input, writing advice, or reorganization of your entire manuscript, please seek an editor who provides comprehensive editing services.

Most books are seen by several editors and/or proofreaders prior to publication. My copy editing services generally catch at least 95% of errors, but I always recommend that clients have their manuscript reviewed a second time by an additional set of eyes (whether a friend, a retired English teacher, a relative, or a professional proofreader) prior to publication.

Most authors who believe they need only basic proofreading services actually need a line by line copy edit prior to proofreading. If you're not sure whether or not you need a copy edit, consider requesting a free sample edit.

How Much Do Your Services Cost?

I charge a flat rate of $35 per hour. Depending on how much editing your document requires, this typically ranges from $2.00 to $4.00 per double-spaced page. Based on your sample and your total page count, I can provide you with a more specific quote.

Can I Get A Free Sample of Your Editing?

Yes. Authors may provide me with two double-spaced pages, which I will edit for free. Just send your sample pages as a Word attachment to ssburris@cox.net. This is the best way to evaluate the type and quality of editing services I provide.  I highly recommend that you ask for a free sample edit anytime you consider a freelance editor.
